Learning Session Details: HPA is honored to welcome Michael Lujan Bevacqua to Maryland from Guam and to have him spend sometime with us to share his journey and to teach us more about the Chamorro Language.

Learning Class Details:
Michael Lujan Bevacqua is a poet, community activist, artist, writer, filmmaker and assistant professor in Chamorro Studies at the University of Guam and is from the Kabesa and Bittot clans of Guam. He is the grandson of Master of Chamoru Culture, the late blacksmith Joaquin Flores Lujan or Tun Jack. His academic work deals primarily with studying the effects of colonization on the Chamoru people and theorizing the possibilities for their decolonization. He is a passionate advocate for the revitalization of the Chamoru language and teaches the language both in the classroom and the community. He has two children, Sumåhi (11) and Akli’e’ (9) and has only spoken Chamoru to them since the day they were born. In 2015, with his brother Jack, they started a company The Guam Bus, which publishes children’s books and comics that use the Chamoru language in exciting and new ways.

Aplok Students: Please bring your Chamorro learning notebook and pen. Please, also if you have a Håle’ Para Agupa’ shirt please wear to class. New students are always welcomed!!!
